WASHINGTON, D. C. — The federal government and Congress will soon approve a drug that relieves pain for people with osteoarthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis — a treatment for the condition.
The federal agency is also considering whether to approve a drug approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and some other chronic conditions. The Food and Drug Administration has been considering whether to approve a drug, but it is not yet clear whether the new drug is approved for other uses.
The FDA has approved two drugs for rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These are arthritis drugs — the drugs that work to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints — and osteoarthritis drugs.
“This is a drug that can provide relief for many people with osteoarthritis,” said Acting Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services Donald B. F. Johnson, MD, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “It may be appropriate to consider other treatment options for people with rheumatoid arthritis as well.”
The FDA has not approved a similar drug for rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, but Johnson said he expects to receive final approval from the agency within the next three years.
The FDA is currently evaluating the drug’s potential to reduce pain and improve quality of life for people with pain.
“I don’t know if the Food and Drug Administration will approve the drug,” Johnson said. “But I know that it’s important for people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis to be aware of this.”
The drug works by blocking the production of a substance called prostaglandins, which cause inflammation. The prostaglandins are chemicals in the joint cells that help people with rheumatoid arthritis feel pain.
The FDA is currently evaluating the drug’s potential to relieve pain and treat chronic arthritis. In December, it will receive approval for two other drugs that work in the same way: a new drug called celecoxib (Celebrex), and a new arthritis treatment called R-Vio. Those medications are also approved for pain and arthritis.
The drug is not approved for rheumatoid arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, Johnson said. But the FDA is reviewing the drug’s potential to reduce pain and improve quality of life for people with pain.
“The drug has shown promise in reducing inflammation, but it’s not without risks,” Johnson said. “We’ll need to conduct further studies to ensure there’s no interaction between the two drugs, and that this is an appropriate clinical trial.”
The FDA has not yet approved a similar drug for osteoarthritis. But Johnson said he expects to receive final approval from the FDA within the next three years.
“I would be interested to see if there’s a safe alternative to celecoxib,” Johnson said. “I don’t think there’s a risk of interactions.”
The FDA is also investigating whether another arthritis drug could be approved for rheumatoid arthritis or arthritis in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
“We don’t have a strong understanding of the drug’s potential for other indications,” Johnson said. “But I think the question is whether it’s safe to use this drug for these patients.”
The Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved a new drug for rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
